Bausch and Lomb Microscope Serial Number Location: How to Find and Date Your Model

[ Rochester, NY ]: Bausch and Lomb Optical 1903-1904. A mostly brass Bausch and Lomb (B&L) microscope. The base has the characteristic B&L circular disk with serial number 43899 which allows us to date this instrument to 1903/1904. The body tube is not marked, nor is the horseshoe base. The eyepiece is a B&L marked eyepiece, marked 3/4 inch.It is approximately 12 inches tall, solid brass, and has a footprint of 4 x 6 inches. Mechanically the inclination features works well. The gross and fine focus mechanisms work cleanly. There are two objectives, both marked Spencer Lens Co. One marked 2 MM N. A. I. 30 Apochromat one one side and 90x on the other. The second objective is marked 4mm APO N.A.O .95. It has a number of markings on it (12, 18 and 24) with additional marks in between but there is no rotation I can figure out so not sure what that is for. I have not tested the optics, but the chassis is in functional condition and looks nice. The stage on this instrument was painted black, and is coming loose in a few places. I suspect if the next owner wanted to the paint could fairly easily be removed. The substage condensor is there, but needs cleaned. There is also an aperture iris which is working but a bit stiff. A great display piece or with another eyepiece and suitable objectives a working instrument.SHIPPING WILL BE AT COST - IF YOU ORDER THROUGH OUR WEBSITE WE WILL ADJUST SHIPPING CHARGES APPROPRIATELY. We often have a range of instruments for sale from $100 to $5000. Please inquire. [28122]

The adjustable arm of the Bausch & Lomb binocular microscope K allows, with relative ease, the increase or decrease of the distance between the objective and the base. Model K-1 is equipped with a pair of matched 10x Huygenian eyepieces and a matched pair of 3.8x achromatic objectives. The K-3 model also features 6.4x eyepieces and substitutes matched pairs of 2.6x and 5.6x objectives for the single pair of the K-1. Most versatile in the K line of binocular microscopes, the Bausch & Lomb K-5, is equipped with three pairs of matched Huygenian eyepieces (5x, 7.5x, and 10x) and three pairs of matched achromats (2.0x, 3.8x, and 8.4x). One objective in each 24-millimeter (8.4x) or 32-millimeter (5.6x) lens pair is fitted with a compensating collar for independent focusing. To facilitate centering and optimize modularity, each matched set of paired objectives is mounted in a substantial, one-piece sliding base, engraved with the serial number of the microscope stand.

The adjustable jointed arm of the Bausch & Lomb KAJ binocular stereomicroscope sets it apart from the competition. Providing versatility through an almost unlimited number of positions, the KAJ microscope offers a modicum of comfort via paired eyepieces that may be adjusted to suit the observer. In addition, the Greenough-style microscope forms an erect, apparently three-dimensional image of the specimen.

A fixed, right angle prism positioned at the upper end of each tube, known as a Porro prism, is oriented so that there are two internal reflections, which result in an erect image inverted by 180 degrees. The eyepieces and prism housings may be rotated to match the exit pupils of the oculars to an observer's interpupillary distance. To ensure reduced optical aberration, the objectives and eyepieces are paired, matched to the microscope stand, and engraved with the microscope serial number. The one-piece, sliding base allows the microscopist to interchange paired objectives without disturbing the centering, focus, or specimen. Optical engineers at Bausch & Lomb created objectives with long working distances and large depth of field, making the KAJ binocular stereomicroscope well adapted for biological or medical work.

According to a table in Bracegirdle4 Bausch & Lomb began using a letter prefix system for serial numbers in 1941 for microscopes. It appears the same system was used for their other instruments as well, indicating a manufacturing date prior to 1941 for this instrument.

Bio-Tape consists of a flexible plastic microscope slide with a pre-defined adhesive area. A center-line marker on the slide aids the user in locating the center when taking the sample and also aids the laboratory analyst in finding the center of the sample. Each slide is provided with a unique serial number for traceability and packed in a slide mailer to prevent cross contamination. 2ff7e9595c
