I have a 2008 Mac Pro, running OSX 10.8.5. Just installed AMD Radeon 5770 graphics card (Apple says this isn't supported; users I read said it works despite what Apple says in knowledge article ( ). When I restarted, the system said my card was a Radeon HD 5000, not 5770. AMD's web site not clear about driver upgrade (and I believe I have to do this, since I took out the old graphics card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 that came with the Mac Pro at purchase). Didn't get a clear answer, yet, from Apple support. Anyone experience this? Does anyone know which driver to manually download from AMD's site? It's not clear, and they also suggested, talk to Apple to get driver support. Here's where I went, and found the choice not clearly mapped out for the Mac (and their autodetect software works only for XP:

Kaz-K: I tried your method. I still get the same reading about the PCI (There was an error while gathering PCI card information) and the system still reports my graphics card is HD 5000. I bought a standard Apple 6 pin PCI cable that connects power from the motherboard directly to the HD 5770 graphics card. FYI, the HD 5770 card I bought was used, but I don't believe that is an issue. So to confirm, you're saying I don't to do anything about upgrading a driver? This card should be recognized by my version of OSX 10.8.5?
Codenamed Barts LE, the Radeon HD 6790 was released on April 5, 2011. There is one retail product available, the Radeon HD 6790. Barts uses shaders of the same 5-way VLIW architecture as HD 5000 series.
Codenamed Barts, the Radeon HD 6800 series was released on October 23, 2010. Products include Radeon HD 6850 and Radeon HD 6870. Barts uses shaders of the same 5-way VLIW architecture as HD 5000 series.[8]

Due to being backwards compatible with older Mac Pros while being less common than its PC counterpart, the Mac version of the Radeon HD 5870 has maintained higher resale values on the aftermarket. However, power users have found that it is possible to flash the cheaper PC version of a Radeon 5000 series GPU card with the firmware from the Mac version.[8]
The following graphics cards are not supported: AMD Radeon HD 4xxx Series, ATI Radeon HD2xxx Series, ATI X1xxx Series, Intel GMA Series, Intel Iris 6100, Intel HD4000, Intel HD5300, Intel HD5000, Intel HD3000, Intel HD6000, Intel Iris 5100, Nvidia 1xx Series, Nvidia 8xxx Series, Nvidia 3xx Series, Nvidia 9xxx Series and Nvidia 7xxx Series.
The AMD Radeon HD 5750 is from the AMD Radeon HD 5000 series and has the old TeraScale 2 micro-architecture. The minimum requirements for Blender 2.8x and 2.9x state that GCN first generation or later is required for running Blender.
Today, Apple announced updates to the iMac lineup. While there were small bumps to the 21.5 inch iMac and the iMac Pro, most of the love was saved for the 27-inch iMac, which starts at $1799.00. Although the new 10th-generation CPUs, 1080p webcam (finally), and nano-texture display options have stolen the headlines, the new 7 nm AMD Radeon Pro 5000 Series GPU options are a pretty big deal as well.
Nevertheless, AMD was not deterred from its small-die strategy and continued on with the HD 5000 series. Nvidia was struggling to get its next-generation GPUs out the door, which meant the aging GTX 285 (a refreshed GTX 280) had to compete against the brand-new Radeon GPUs. Unsurprisingly, the HD 5870 trounced the 285, putting AMD back in the lead with a single GPU card for the first time since the 9800XT.
Out of curiosity after last month's MacBook Air benchmarks with the Haswell CPU and HD Graphics 5000, I carried out a Sandy Bridge Mac Mini OS X vs. Ubuntu Linux comparison with this older hardware and the very mature drivers. The test configurations included:
While owners of ATI/AMD Radeon HD 5000/6000/7000 series graphics cards have already had a Catalyst 12.6 Linux driver -- which many Linux users found to be disappointing -- today AMD has released a Catalyst 12.6 "Legacy" Linux driver for those using the older generations of Radeon hardware.
Just one day after the Radeon HD 5000 series on Gallium3D gained GLSL 1.30 compliance by default, the R600 (Radeon HD 2000/3000 series) and R700 (Radeon HD 4000 series) now have GL Shading Language 1.30 support advertised by default.
The AMD Radeon HD 5000 "Evergreen" graphics cards, which at the hardware level is capable of OpenGL 4.2 / GLSL 4.20, is finally advertising GLSL 1.30 compliance by default with the Mesa Gallium3D "R600g" driver. GLSL 1.30 is the GL Shading Language revision introduced at the time of OpenGL 3.0.
